New ‘Choose Your Currency’ Toggle

Owning a store online can be a tricky thing when it comes to dealing with customers all over the world. For the two of us, it’s especially tricky because we’re both Australians, but one of us is living in the UK. What currency do we set? Whose goods-and-services tax do we charge – the 10% GST or the 20% VAT? How do we manage the co-ownership at tax time?

We debated staying with the Australian market, but there was a hitch. Our distributor gives the best rates for shipping to whichever country you set as your main country EXCEPT Australia. Though we print and ship from Australia to Australia for most products if you live there, shipping costs are generally still outrageous. This is not our distributor’s fault, of course.

We wanted some benefits from shipping, and as the UK is one of the biggest card markets in the world, and as cards form the bulk of what we sell, we decided that the shipping cost benefits for sending a set of 10 cards made it worth setting up the store in the UK. We also thought, as Lisa is in the UK and is the one who sets the prices, it was easier to leave it as UK pounds as she understands that currency and the value of UK goods a bit better.

But we get that not everyone can easily visualise their currency converting from UK pounds. For some of us, it’s easier to see US dollars and go from there. So we’ve included a new toggle at the top of our shop screen that lets you swap between GBP and US dollars. If you’re from Australia, as many of you are, you might find US dollars easier.

For now, we only get two currencies because we’re trialling the free version, but if we think it’s of value, we might opt for the paid version and set up more currencies. If you want it in your currency, we’d love to hear from you. Write to us or comment below and tell us what country you’re from.
